Ron Green

It is with great sadness we relay the recent passing of Ron Green, aged 92.
Ron was introduced to bowls whilst still a teenager. His father (himself a reknowned player) took him on to the green of the old Shepherds Bush BC in Wormholt Park (long-since gone) for a few ends. Although he enjoyed it, he dismissed it as being “for old men”. However he returned to it at the ripe old age of 37, developing his love for the game in the 1970s, firstly at Perivale, then (when he felt he was good enough), spending over 30 years at West London BC. During his time at West London, he won the Championship five times, including going three years unbeaten in the 80s, also winning Club Pairs with Rob and Mixed Pairs with his wife, Beryl. Ron also enjoyed the challenge of Middlesex. He once reached the last 8 of the county singles (back when you started in the Preliminary, or even Extra Preliminary Round). His success was even more remarkable as he played EVERY round away at the very strong Parsons Green Club, despite often being taken on their notorious rink 4. Also, in 1983, in a county match versus Warwickshire, playing on the now-famous Leamington Spa greens, against a home club four, he skipped his rink to a victory of 40-4. This remains a county record to this day.
He moved to West Ealing Bowls Club where he played for a short time, but in recent years he had been more of a spectator than a player, giving newer players the benefit of his experience.
Ron was a great believer in giving back to bowls what the sport had given him. He served as Captain at Perivale, Captain, President and Match Secretary at West London, and also held office for Ealing & District and Ad-Finem Associations.
Ron's funeral will take place on Wednesday 19th February, at 1:30pm at Breakspear Crematorium, the afterwards back here at West Ealing.
Family flowers only. Donations in Ron's memory can be made here https://ron-green-1932-2025.muchloved.com/ in aid of the Alzheimer's Society for research in to a disease that stole Ron's wife Beryl from him too soon.
R.I.P. Ron
